The best I can hope for

by Ludger Hofmann-Engl

The best I can hope for

so much it is
and so few have been
granted

The best I can hope for

to spend the rest
of my life
in peace

unknown
unapproached
untroubled

and then to pass away
in peace
in my sleep

near a lake
that would be great

to have one last swim
return
to my cottage
and pass away
in my sleep

and then
I don't want to be trouble
to anyone

I surely would upset
the person
who found me
dead

Is it not that life
is so full
of trouble
and we can't even
die in peace

Maybe if I drowned
during my last
swim

But I really don't like
drowning

There is hope
that by the time
I die
nobody really bothers

That would be nice
and peaceful

A cottage
near a lake
that would be
great
