Chameleon Group of Composers

was a New Music organization which had been set up by composers based in Croydon (South London) as a self-support group. The group was active between 1995 and 2000 in organizing a number of contemporary music festivals and concerts.

Concerts organized in the past include concerts at the ICA, the Croydon Clock Tower and Fairfield Halls. Most of the concerts attracted the local press and have throughout received enthusiastic responses. In one instance Ruth Goslett (Croydon Advertiser, May 2nd, 1997) compared the group to Russia's Mighty Handful and France's Les Six. Even if such comparison seems overstated, it pays tribute to the fact that the group was successful in putting on more than 30 premieres by living composers. The group made a performance of a Coleridge-Taylor piece alongside with the music by Hurlstone possible, both composers who had strong associations with Croydon during their life times.

The site has been maintained by Dr L Hofmann-Engl since 1999. While the site was intended to promote the group initially, it later became an online resource for music, music theory and music psychology. However, by now the site is most popular for its content in relation to narcissistic personality disorder with many daily queries coming from the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia and others. Readers are encouraged to contribute with their own stories and perhaps more theoretical and practical advice.

In general, contemporary music organisations are encouraged to submit information which may be published on www.chameleongroup.org.uk. For information, please contact the webmaster.

The group received support form Croydon, the Bliss Trust, the Britten-Pears Foundation, the Holst Foundation and others.

For music theoretical contributions, please contact the editor.

The site has further been extended on topics which are of personal and professional interest to Dr Ludger Hofmann-Engl. These topics are:

  • Musical software based on java
  • Support for the Linux Platform Fedora
  • Poetry
  • Photography

Suggestions are always very welcome and may be submitted to hofmann-engl@chameleongroup.org.uk

Note, chameleongroup.org.uk is not identical with chameleongroup.co.uk. The latter publishes books. Their homepage is chameleongroup.co.uk. We, however, have and will redirect misguided enquiries.
